Varicocele

What is Varicocele?

The testicles are located in the body, inside the body called the scrotum (bags). VARICOCELE is a varicose disease that occurs as a result of the severe expansion and increased folds of the veins (plexus pampiniformis veins) that carry the dirty blood of the testicles towards the heart.

Varicocele is more common on the left side. It is very rare to see it alone on the right side and should be examined carefully, especially for right kidney tumors. Varicocele may be bilateral in about 10% of patients.

Varicocele usually does not cause any physical complaints until it reaches very serious sizes. Sometimes, in advanced varicoceles, they may cause complaints such as pain, shrinkage, and a feeling of fullness in the testicles. Varicocele can sometimes cause dull pain in the groin and a pulling sensation in the testicle. The pain increases when standing for a long time and decreases when lying down.

However, in some men with varicocele, it causes INFERTILITY (difficulty in having children) even without causing any physical discomfort.

All in all;

Approximately 40-50% of men suffering from infertility have varicocele. In these enlarged varicose veins, blood must normally be transported towards the heart at a certain speed. However, since the valves in these vessels are damaged, blood flows backwards (to the testicles), especially in cases where intra-abdominal pressure increases (for example, during coughing and straining).

For this reason, it causes an increase in temperature in the testicles and therefore negatively affects sperm production, and the decrease in some metabolic products and oxygenation found in high levels in the blood accumulated in the enlarged veins negatively affects sperm production and causes infertility.
